As Vegetable Gardening comes to an end, many gardeners often wonder what to do next. Are you going to leave the garden to the weeds or are you starting a new garden and need to choke out the weeds or break up heavy soil. Perhaps you don’t have enough compost material to add to your garden and are tired of buying expensive fertilizers. For these reasons and more you might consider planting a cover crop.

These crops are not harvested but planted to protect the soil from erosion, weeds, and improve soil quality. Cover cropping is about thinking ahead and planning your garden for the next year.

Barb Harrison, the Vegetable Garden Lead will explain the different types of cover crops and the advantages of each one. After a brief presentation inside, we will then visit the Vegetable Garden and learn how to plant a cover crop. Please dress appropriately for time outside in the garden.

The talk is free, but seating is limited and registration is required.  Please click on the link below to register.  If you encounter problems registering or if you have questions, call 828-255-5522.
