Special 2022 Events:

Thursdays in The Learning Garden. New in 2023!  The Learning Garden is offering the public the opportunity to learn in the garden, on selected Thursdays, February – October. Each month, programs will be selected from one of four Series: Dahlia Series, Dye Garden Series, Rose Garden Series, and Vegetable Garden Series. Visitors can also walk around and soak in our lovely gardens!  Our gardens open at 9:00 am and demonstration programs run between 10-11:30am.  The programs in each Series are currently being finalized and will be posted here as soon as the schedule is completed.

WNC Gardening Symposium – October 12.  This event is sold out!  After a two-year hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the WNC Gardening Symposium team is planning a symposium in 2022. We look forward to seeing you again. More information about the program, CLICK HERE.

OctoberFest in The Learning Garden – October 15, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.  Family Fun in the Garden!  Come join us in The Learning Garden to celebrate the end of the growing season.  Enjoy fun activities for children and adults. Explore the gardens filled with Master Gardener volunteers to answer your gardening questions. Registration is not required.  Additional details are included on the Events calendar on the bottom of this page. Click HERE to see the flyer for this event.

Ongoing educational activities & events:

GARDEN HELPLINE – The Garden Helpline is closed for the season.
While the Helpline isn’t staffed, you can still get help with your questions! Specific information on how to get your gardening questions answered is contained on the Garden Helpline page on this site. The Garden Helpline will reopen in March 2023.

Gardening in the Mountains Series: A series of 60 minute seminars covering various gardening topics. These on-line programs will be offered the third Thursday of each month, February thru October, unless otherwise indicated.  Here is the schedule and topics for this year:  2022 Gardening in the Mountains Schedule  Refer to the calendar on the bottom of this page for program details and registration instructions.

Saturday Seminar Series*: A series of hands-on seminars, presented by Master Gardeners covering various gardening topics. These programs will be offered in-person in The Learning Garden on selected Saturdays, March – October.  To ensure a good learning experience, attendance may be limited. Click here for the schedule and topics for this year:  2022 Saturday Seminar Schedule  Refer to the calendar at the bottom of this page for the program details, and registration instructions. While the Buncombe County mask mandate has been lifted, participants are welcome to wear a mask to feel more comfortable, indoors or outdoors. The number of participants is limited to allow for spacing.

Backyard Composting Demonstrations:  Extension Master Gardener Volunteers maintain two compost demonstration sites―one at Jesse Israel Garden Center in the Western NC Farmers Market and the other at the Learning Garden on the property of the Extension Center on Mount Carmel Road. The Farmers Market site provides demonstrations from 10:00am to 1:00pm on the second Saturday each month, April through September, exceptions will be noted on the Events calendar on the bottom of this page. An additional Composting demonstration area is located at The Learning Garden.  Click here for details about The Learning Garden. There are four different composting methods on display―wood pallet single-bin system, plastic bin, traditional 3-bin system and tumbling composter. Examples of vermiculture (worm composting) are also usually available. The sites are stocked with informational pamphlets on the how-to and why of composting and they complement the information available in the composting video on this website. Extension Master GardenerSM Plant Clinics*:  
After a two year hiatus, the Extension Master GardenerSMPlant Clinics are back and in-person at Asheville City Market.  Formerly known as Info Tables, Master Gardener volunteers will be at the Asheville City Market, located at 52 N. Market Street, Asheville, NC 28801 on May 28, June 25, July 30, and August 27 to answers to all of your gardening questions and address your concerns. EMGVs will also staff Plant Clinics at the North Carolina Arboretum on May 26, 27, and 28. All the Plant Clinics planned for 2022 will be held rain or shine, so please check the forecast and dress appropriately for the weather. Check the calendar below for details related to each Plant Clinic.
