Vegetable Garden Series: Building an ADA Compliant Raised Garden

Thursday, March 23, 2023

NC Cooperative Extension
Buncombe County Center
49 Mount Carmel Road
Asheville, NC

Presenter: Alan Wagner, Extension Master GardenerSM Volunteer

Raised beds improve access for gardeners with special needs.
Raised beds gardening

Gardening has always been a popular activity for individuals, but as one ages it becomes more difficult. Those who are wheelchair-bound and other people with disabilities find it hard to take care of a garden. Accessible gardens such as raised beds offer a chance for these individuals to still grow vegetables and enjoy gardening.

Join Alan Wagner as he explains how he built an ADA compliant raised bed. He will go through all the parameters on how high to build the bed, the dimensions of the bed, and the materials he used. ADA compliance is short for the Americans with Disabilities Act Standards for Accessible Design.

This program will be held outside in the Vegetable growing area of The Learning Garden where the ADA compliant raised bed will be located. We will meet indoors first and then go outside. Please dress appropriately for the weather.

Registration: The talk is free but class size is limited and registration is required. Please click on the link below to register. If you encounter problems registering or if you have questions, call 828-255-5522.

Were self-seeders a good choice?

Do you ever think about redoing your garden?  Perhaps some plants didn’t do well or did too well.  Do you regret some of your plant selections or hardscape choices and think a redesign is needed? Has your original design vision changed?

Take advantage of this unique informal opportunity to visit and learn in The Learning Garden. Come ask questions and observe as Master Gardeners cut back, dig out, plan a walkway, and redesign the Four Seasons Garden area.

Registration is not required; just drop-by and learn! Please dress appropriately for the weather.
