Ongoing educational activities & events:
Gardening in the Mountains Series*: A series of 90 minute seminars covering various gardening topics. These programs will be offered the third Thursday of each month, February thru October at the Extension Office, 49 Mt. Carmel Road.
Due to classroom construction this summer, most of the June thru October seminars will be held at the Mountain Horticulture Corps Research Station, 455 Research Drive, Mills River, NC 28759. Click here for driving directions.

Saturday Seminar Series*: A series of hands-on seminars covering various gardening topics. These programs will be held on five Saturday mornings, March – September. NOTE: The July 29, September 23, and Octobe 7 seminars will be held at the Mountain Horticulture Corps Research Station, 455 Research Drive, Mills River, NC 28759. Backyard Composting Demonstrations: Composting demonstrations will be held the 2nd and 4th Saturday, April 8 – October 14. The demonstration site is located at the edge of Jesse Isreal’s property at the WNC Farmers Market.
GARDEN HELPLINE – DAILY during regular Extension office hours
The Helpline and Extension office are open 8am – 5pm on weekdays. (Closed on state holidays) During the growing season, March through October, Extension Master Gardener Volunteers are on duty to answer phones and assist visitors from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday and Friday and 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. Call 828-255-5522 or bring your plant problem or question to Buncombe County Extension Center, 49 Mt. Carmel Rd. (Please bring samples large enough for plant identification).
Ask-a-Gardener Information Tables and Plant Clinics
Watch for these at events and tailgate markets. Ask questions, bring samples of plants for identification or problem diagnosis, bring samples of insects for identification, learn about upcoming Extension Master Gardener Volunteer programs, purchase A Gardening Guide for our Mountains, get Cooperative Extension publications and pick up soil test kits.
